In the 17th, 18th, and 19th century the family of people named Omiela was very large. Its representatives lived in the northern Poland (namely in Kuyavia and Pomerania) in three places: Gostycyn, Nowe, and in individual cases – Raciąż. Gostycyn was the largest cluster of the Omielas in Poland. Through married daughters they partly "took over" Bysław as well. It was the expansion of genes, not of the name.
How did it happen that a family so numerous suddenly disappeared from the map of Poland? In 1990 there were still 5 persons of this name living in Poland. In 2002 there were no Omielas left. They vanished. The simplest explanation is that there were significantly more girls being born and that later boys also had daughters. That's a little far-fetched theory. There must have been another reason. And there was. The family left, or actually sailed, through Hamburg and Brema to the United States. It is the USA where we can currently find people named Omiela and O'miela. If we look well into it, we'll find out that their ancestors were born in Gostycyn.
What inspired my exploration was the fact that my great-great-grandmother's name was Marianna Omiela and she was the wife of Jan Pliszka, my great-great-grandfather. This was 1772. My grandmother's sister, Elżbieta Pliszka, married Józef Omiela in 1939 in Gostycyn. I haven't yet managed to determine what the relationship between Marianna and Józef was. However, there's no doubt that all the people named Omiela, residing in Gostycyn and its surroundings, were related.
In the late 17th and in the 18th century the family was known under the name Omieliński, and later it transformed into Omiela, or perhaps it just returned to its original form. Of course its spelling in the registers had also different versions: Omala, Omela, Omielański, Omieliński, Umiela.
Today it is difficult to determine the ancestral lineages, not only of the people named Omiela, and not only due to lacking data. It is also because the fashion for specific first names is not the invention of our times – it's dateless. Hence it is not always possible to clearly establish which Marianna got married, to which Józef (or Jan) where at the same time in multiple families there were several girls named Marianna and many men called Józef or Jan. We can only be sure that Marianna Omiela married Jan Pliszka and that they had at least five children. But often there were several families from which Marianna or her husband could have come from. This applies mainly to the data from before the foundation of registry offices and to the data included in registers kept negligently, where the age of spouses was approximate and the name of the same person could vary between the entries.
It is also worth noting that if genealogical records state that someone was born in Gostycyn, Bysław etc., they usually refer to the place of marriage ceremony, i.e. the location of parish or registry office, while the couple actually lived in a small village somewhere nearby.
The Omielas settled in USA. It is far away from Gostycyn – in kilometers and in time that elapsed counting not only from the first departures from the country, but also from the departure of the last representative of the family overseas. The fact that the name survived in intact, almost unchanged form, speaks well about the people who wear it.
I have made an attempt to reconstruct the families who once lived in and around Gostycyn. I know that it's only a fragment of often unrelated data. But I had to start somewhere. I'm hoping for help from people who have the name Omiela in their family tree and from those in USA who still wear it.
